Home Maintenance

Unprecedented ... fluid, touch, contact, social and physical distancing. These are all new terms we are hearing daily in these extraordinary times and they are becoming all too familiar to us and the new common vernacular. I trust you are all doing well and enjoying this time with family as we adhere to the recommendations of our health care professionals and are staying home as much as possible.

It's not the time to be talking about new projects or building that big addition, but there are some home related tasks you could be doing to protect the place you are spending so much of your time.

This is the perfect time to look at some of those home maintenance issues that perhaps get put on hold or forgotten about as we go through the regular business of our daily lives. Here is a short list of some proactive items to keep you busy and your home and loved ones a little safer and better protected:

  1. We just had the time change. Did you remember to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors?
  2. Change those furnace filters and clean those lint traps and even the lint duct to the exterior of your home if you know how to properly disconnect and reconnect it.
  3. We will be getting the big melt soon, so make sure that gutters and down pipes are clear for effective water management around your home. While you're up there, take a look at your roof shingles as well.
  4. Inspect your chimney and if you have a wood burning unit that you have been using all winter, clean out that old ash from the unit and your ash dump as well.
  5. Look at your caulking around countertops and sinks etc., and if it needs replacing, now would be the perfect time to do this as well.

There are plenty of other suggestions you can find online, but these are just a few of the main ones that should be done annually. Take care of yourselves, be well and we will see you on the other side of this issue. Then, we can talk about how we can take your space to new levels.
